Qigong Workshop - Qigong Foundations and 8 Methods Friday 31st January 2025 – 12noon to 2pm This workshop will cover fundamental mind and body foundations in Qigong and Tai Chi practice - including: - warm up and preparatory exercises, joint mobilising, stretching, loosening exercises, breathing exercises - physical structure, posture, shapes and stances, internal structure, standing qigong practice - mind-body connection, somatic experience, use of imagination, the 'qigong experience' - movement foundations and qigong movement forms - Cheng Man-ch'ing's 8 Methods - 8 simple yet profound mind-body exercises - originally taught by Tai Chi master Cheng Man-ch'ing and used to convey the essence of Tai Chi practice in a simple, direct way. Open to all levels and complete beginners - £20 / £15 drop-in ________________________________________________________ Qigong Workshop – Huang Sheng Shyan’s 5 Loosening Exercises Friday 28th February 2025 – 12noon to 2pm A set of 5 simple, accessible but challenging exercises, devised by Huang Sheng Shyan, a reknowned 20th century Tai Chi master who lived in China, Taiwan and Malaysia. The exercises are influenced by White Crane and Lohan Kung Fu and Tai Chi Chuan. These exercises help train co-ordination, stability, relaxation and precision in posture and movement. They emphasise vertical connection from the ground through the body, rotation, and maintaining equilibrium and balance in movement. Open to all levels and complete beginners - £20 / £15 drop-in ______________________________________________________ Qigong Workshop – Liu Xiheng’s 'Swimming Dragon' Exercises Friday 28th March 2025 – 12noon to 2pm These are another series of exercises developed from Tai Chi practice by Taiwanese Tai Chi teacher Liu Xiheng (senior student of Cheng Man-ch'ing). They emphasise development of the legs, waist and centre - and the mind-body qualities of relaxation, release and equilibrium in movement. The exercises focus initially on the connection between the ground and the spine, through the hips, pelvis, sacrum and abdomen - and move on to a series of simple movements taken from Tai Chi, while maintaining whole body focus. Open to all levels and complete beginners - £20 / £15 drop-in _________________________________________ Qigong Workshop – Shibashi 18 Tai Chi Qigong Friday 30th May 2025 – 12noon to 2pm Shibashi is an 18 Movement Taiji Qigong, created by Lin Hou Sheng, using movements from Tai Chi Chuan combined with Qigong principles of “correct posture, slow & lively movements and proper breathing”. Compared to Tai Chi, it has the advantage of being a relatively simple set of movements that are accessible and easy to learn, while having the same potential health benefits. An in-depth workshop on the Tai Chi sequence taught at the beginners and regulars classes - an opportunity for students to improve and develop their Tai Chi form practice. Suitable for current students, those with Tai Chi experience or keen beginners - £20 / £15 drop-in ___________________________________________ Tai Chi Workshop – Partnerwork & Pushing Hands Friday 1st August 2025 – 12noon to 2pm A workshop exploring Tai Chi partnerwork & 'pushing hands' practice – we will explore foundation attributes in Tai Chi practice via co-operative partnerwork and begin learning the core 'pushing hands' or partner practice set from Tai Chi - known as Peng Lu Ji An (aka Ward Off, Roll Back, Press & Push). Suitable for current students, those with Tai Chi experience or keen beginners - £20 / £15 drop-in _______________________________ Yiquan & Baguazhang For Beginners Friday 31st October – 12noon to 2pm A workshop introducing the Chinese arts of Yiquan & Baguazhang – which share similarities with Tai Chi but are less well known and less commonly practised - we will work on basic beginners practices, including standing postures, ‘mother palms’ (body shapes), foundation movement exercises, hand techniques, linear and circle walking exercises. These practices emphasise more overt stretching and spiralling movements and can feel similar to some yoga standing postures. Open to all levels and complete beginners - £20 / £15 drop-in ________________________________ Scaravelli-Inspired Yoga & Meditation Friday 28th November – 12noon to 2pm Unlike other modern Yoga approaches, Scaravelli-inspired Yoga doesn't seek to strain or force the body into postures - instead, we engage with the breath, gravity, ground, space and centre - to creating the conditions to release the spine and body into postures and movements. This approach has much in common with Chinese Internal Martial Arts like Tai Chi. The workshop may include some breathwork and meditation practice – with influences from Buddhist meditation and reference to Tai Chi & Qigong principles.
